My five year old son talks in his sleep. I hear him almost every night. Sometimes I can make sense of what he is saying, sometimes it is just nonsensical stuff. My husband talks in his sleep sometimes, also. I had a cousin who did this too, when he was a kid. How common is this?

Very common, I know that as a kid I did it, so did my brother and sister. I think it is just the mind trying to process everything that happened in the day and trying to "talk" it out.

My 7 year old son also talks in his sleep. He doesn't do it every night. I hear him doing so most often in times of stress. I should mention that my son is autistic, with speech delay, so that might play a part. He could be working out his communication difficulties in his dream life, and it carries through into actual talking.

Could it be that your son might have language issues or something like that? If you're really worried about this, by all means contact your pediatrician and get a more detailed diagnosis. It might well be that there's nothing wrong and this is just a developmental phase. Still, knowing that will put your mind at ease, right?

Hope this helps.

My four yr old son does it all the time! He will yell out "Stop Shawnie", which is his 51/2 yr old brothers name, and then he will say, "leave me alone", and then a few seconds later he will break out laughing hysterically! I think that is soooo cute! A couple of my other kids kind of mumble in their sleep(I have five kids), and my husband have told me that I have talked in my sleep plenty of times before. So don't worry, it's perfectly normal, and it is very very common. What I've found out is that usually you are in the middle of a dream, and you are saying out loud what you are saying in the dream. I hope that this helps some. Your son sounds adorable! Take good care of him, and may God bless you and your family.

Very common. I talk in my sleep. My kids both (when young - like your son's age) even had a couple episodes of walking in their sleep (out to the living room where we'd be watching tv). It was actually very very funny on both occasions because they were so out of it trying to carry on a conversation. I talk in my sleep. I just make sure my husband knows that when I'm asleep and talking - it's the ONLY time I'm lying. LOL (cover your A**)

My hubby talks in his sleep, too. I always try to make sense of what he says when he's doing it, but I only understand every second or third word. As long as your son isn't panicky and doesn't wake up and cry....don't worry about it. Make it a habit to talk to him before he goes to sleep....ask what the best part of his day was...and also what the worst part was....

both me and my brother talk in our sleep(but he does it a lot more than me)
once i asked my friend to make me a sandwich while i was asleep! and she did it.
my brother keeps going on about a Turkey and a chicken(he also makes Turkey noises). and shouts and swears at someone because he wanted dog food not cat food.
he wakes up his wife and she has to answer him other wise he goes on forever.

Sometimes people do it when they are under stress (unresolved issues on the mind).
