What is your goal with earning a PhD? If you are serious about it then you will want to develop some relationship with the faculty at the program, which is hard to do if you are doing this "externally". If you are not serious about it then what is the point?

If your plan is to go into academia (teach at a business school, for example), I think it will be hard to achieve that unless you make serious time for the PhD. It is the only way you will get a job eventually. Alternatively, if you are a really successful business person and that's how you plan to get a position in a b-school then you probably don't need a PhD anyway.
