Why do colleges allow "African American Student Unions" or "Chicano Club" but disallow "Caucasian Only" ones?

Why don't colleges allow "White Clubs" under the auspices they allow non-white members. That's what they require of the other clubs, right?

Good question...I would say that is just as discriminatory as an all white club would be.

The reason is this. For many years minorities were not even represented in post secondary institutions so therefore the entire university was one large Caucasian only club. Many places are still like this; when was the last time you went to a country club, they may accept minority members but very few minorities are financial successful to be members as Caucasians still generally run the "system". Ever hear of the term "Old Money", how many of these people do you think are NOT white?

The American way, holidays, and values are generally derived from Caucasian roots. Therefore clubs such as the aforementioned ones are simply pockets of culture that have not been represented previously in pop culture or college campuses. There is no need for Caucasian clubs on campus as these clubs are already overrepresented all over the country.

By the way these clubs generally welcome Caucasians but sadly there have been many Caucasian Only clubs that have not allowed other races membership.

They feel that "caucasians", being the dominant race, don't need identity organizations. I think also, they believe that such an organization wouldn't exist other than to promote racism, while they believe that other groups need the identity groups simply for maintaining contact with other members of their race to keep an affinity. If you're in the minority, it might be fun to have a group of people of your own race or culture to hang with occasionally, but if you're in the majority, you probably will find those people everywhere you go.

In practice, I can understand the mindset, but in principle, there's something discomforting about it. Shouldn't we all be treated equally, regardless of race? Once you give the authorities power to determine who "deserves" the opportunity to form groups, you've opened the door to all kinds of mischief.

Plus, as someone pointed out, I'm not so sure caucasians are still nearly so dominant as they once were.

But I think there's a point you also need to recognize: on most campuses, African American Student Unions are not "black only", and white students are traditionally free to join. Virtually all colleges restrict student orgs from being blatantly racist. So, regardless of any other factor, I don't think you'll ever see a "Caucasian ONLY" org allowed.

*exasperated sigh* For the same reason there are no Men's Studies courses in college like there are Women's Studies, because it's uneseccaruy and redundant. Plus white is just a term to represent power and prestige, not culture or race. Even immigrants from Italy and Germany, etc were eventually classified as "white" after a few years of being in this country. What country is your family originally from? WHy don't you start a group that represents that part of you as opposed to the racially charged "white" groups that you so yearn for. What are you lacking in other groups that you think a "Caucasion Only" groups could compensate for? Also, do you even read the other questions that people post, your like the 100th person to ask this this week. BTW, Having balck channel and the like are not "reverse racism" it just makes up for the void that mainstream society refuses to fill for many minorities who are under represented in mainstream media and society. Even on BET, many of the commercials are dominated by white- own companies/ sponsers - don't worry, you guys still get a piece of the pie.

I think things are changing: BET, Miss BLACK America, Black News, they don't get it! I do think with time these very racist organization are going to be a thing of the past. I remember being a part of a school when busing was the answer to solve racial problem...are previously all white school was suddenly 30 African American (early 70's). I saw black destroying our school, I was introduced to the "F" word, they were awful, they group up in front of our school each morning to chant at the white kids saying: Black is beautiful, black is sweet black is something white can't beat..each and every morning. During that year the school officials made the entire school watch a film on racism..I thought thank God...they are going to expose what is going on in our school..NOT so, the movie we all watched was nothing up horrible white kids abusing black children..calling them names and trying to stop them from getting an education..the exact opposite of what was really going on. My older brothers and sisters went to school in the 60's..they said the same thing blacks kids were terrible, disrupting the class rooms..violence, insults etc..the media show just the opposite.
This is what made me angry..the Lie's they tell.

We need a real conversation about race..but we have to be REAL. Liberalism doesn't allow this it's not PC..but the truth must be told, we as whites are afraid to speak the truth and say what we have experienced..we have compaints too..we have experienced racism that is instutional...we have horroe stories as well. We all need to speak..not just a few

its funny how the "indianadude" can only bring up the 60' and 70's ..those were some of the worse times in history to be a minority.....wouldnt u be mad if you could only go to a "colored" water fountain..or sit only in the back of the bus.....

get a life.....there is no way in hades that 30 black kids could have destroyed the school like u said..with all those whites kids around they would have been outnumbered....justice did not lean toward the "colored" folks in leaned toward the "white" folks...meaning they would have been expelled for that because the whites did not want any blacks in their schools anyway..so any excuse to kick them out would have been used..

you do realize that the caucasian to African American/ Latino ratio is about 10/1 in a college setting.
thats a lot of WHITE for a person to get lost in, perhaps they just want to know that there are more people from their own cultural background out their and that makes it easier for them to find each other.
WE on the other hand...are so thick in the college sene we dont need to "seek out" our own kind!
