Because some people are competitive and are just a bit sad. They probably do this because they have nothing better going on in their lives.

You'll find it's a lack of confidence on their part, also frustration. I know some of these people will appear most asertive to you but it's only an act. Deep down ... They're not! They may see you getting on with your life, doing things they secretly wish they could have achieved only ... Were not prepared to make the effort to succeed! So as a result, they feelf frustrated, unhappy with their lives, and as it is easier to judge/blame/envy others than get off their sorry backside and do something positive! Emulate themslves to better themselves/lives ... They do what they're best at ... Go on and on about themslves, how much better they are than anyone else. Deep down they know they're not but hey! Would never admit to it.
Don't let them irritate you! Just smile at them! A lovely smile and say "O well done you" And keep going doing what you want to do, being what you want to be. They'll get the message eventually.
And don't forget, as you move on ... You'll meet other people, more deserving of your friendship, people who will be on the same level as you are, you'll find these people who bugged you will remain the same while you'll be 100 feet above them! You'll be happy with yourself/your life ... They never will.
Best wishes

Well... most people constantly need to prove (to themselves) their own self-worthyness. Usually by showing somebody else that they are better. Which is OK - as long as they don't hurt the next person deliberately. Very few (and I am not of them) have so high a self-esteem that they do not need to compare themselves to the rest of the humanity and try to show up better.

Because people are jealous of others and hate to feel that anyone is better than them so human nature makes them put others down so they can feel superior to them. It is sad and i think we should all be there for each other as life is short so why go through life making it unhappy for each other.

I think most people try to pump up their own egos by putting others down. It's all part of the process of competition within a system.

They feel so low about themselves that they have to psych
other people into believing they are lesser beings. Some even think they are superior than others. Nazis hold that belief.

This stems directly from the innate animal inside us adhering to survival of the fittest. If we are better, we will live longer (or so the sub-concious thought goes). i too hate people like that.

and the answer is "PRIDE," fueled by their own Insecurities. take JOY in not being full of pride, and laugh at the fools who are full of themselves. example George Bush, Tom Cruise or for that matter most of the TV/movie celebrities.

nothing wrong with trying to be the best at things you do! why do something if your not going to do it to the best of your ability!!
And whats wrong with having self confidence?? I accept that some people are a bit too cocky but not all!!
sounds to me that your a sore looser!! and your so shy that confident people intimidate you!!
