While it is very easy to tarnish a reputation, it is very difficult to get rid of a reputation.
You have to build your self a positive reputation and it takes time. You have to change you actions, build the trust of the people around you.
You will have to think long and hard about the reputation you are trying to get away from. Is it just the fact you have a reputation that is bothering you or the actual behaviour. You have to want to change for your self not for others.
But if you are will, it can be done. Just have to show people that the reputation you have now is not the reputation you deserve. They must see thought you actions that you are different from that reputation

5 silver bullets:
a) change your own thinking about yourselves. Then worry about others
b) Look at reasons of current reputation. Get top 3 reasons. Find way to alternatives for those and adopt them slowly one by one. Slow transition helps. If you move fast, it may look dramatic and could hurt instead of help
c) Get company of people who can help to reinforce the new way you want people to look at you with.
d) Don't feel shy of this change. everyone changes some point in time, one way or other. If change of reputation is for good, people will welcome it anyway.
e) Be honest to this change. If change of reputation you want only as a perception change without changing you, it is not going to work.

Buck up, be brave, defy your critics to do better, assuring them by your cocky defiance that you will do better. Be strong unto yourself and others will accept you as you are or fall by the way side while you step ahead. You must be the center of the Universe, a reputation is merely other people's baggage.

Leave the country, or start trying to build a new one (reputation, not country).
