It's intricate musically, plus the lyrics are poetic and speak about emotions that everyone can relate to, in a slightly oblique way. If a song is to be timeless it needs not to use overly hip slang that can date it. The guitar duet section is classic too. The 'Devil worship' thing is a myth. The 'steely' knives reference was a big up to Steely Dan who had name checked The Eagles on one of their tunes.

It has an awesome chored progression - simple but dressed up to perfection - and it also has great lyrics that could go literally or have a hidden meaning. Oh, and of course, the Eagles rule anyway, so why wouldn't it be a best rated song?! lol

Because it's got a good melody, and the lyrics about not being able to leave have meaning to everyone.
