Because some ideas, like freedom, liberty, human rights and self-determination, are worth fighting and dying for. Because none of these have been achieved without bloodshed - nobody just gives these to you. Somebody fought, killed and died to secure these blessings.

That's the irony of freedom.... you're never free to enjoy freedom if you're just a slave to defending it.
Ultimately, however, people don't risk their lives for democracy... they risk their lives for money. Sometimes their own money (mercenaries), and sometimes other people's money (soldiers). By "other people's money," it could be a handful of people, or an entire economy.
The Cold War wasn't about Democracy vs Communism any more than the last US Presidential election was about gay rights... gay rights was a side issue that the people in charge blew up way out of proportion to gain the support of their people while at the same time distracting them from the important things going on behind the scenes. It sounds better to say you're fighting for freedom than to say you're fighting for oil... just like it sounds better to say you're fighting for God than to say you're fighting for gold.

We don't have a democracy!
With the exception of Iraq most have been over our way of life.
Though Vietnam was started with a lie it was to stop the spread of Communism as they thought, wrongly, at the time, that one nation at a time would fall under communist domination in the Far East.
I think if we were attacked that America would respond to save our nation!
As far as this other crap, it is all BS and we do not have to participate in losing military lives for oil corporations!

Would you have preferred to live in Iraq under Sodom Husain ? Well you have freedoms , still some, but if you do not like it pack your bags and leave. And discover just how life can be without democracy.

If we don't protect our way of life we will get invaded by N. Korea.
If that happened we would have to change the name of the country to "DOH!!! "
