We have a young childrens book that we have asked someone to do some illustrations for. How much would be a fair price to pay them?

The girl is about 18 too - so I'm wondering if $500 would be too much?

If you're planning to get the book accepted for publication, you have a better chance of getting published if you don't already have an illustrator. If you have pictures, the publisher judges based on the pictures AND the text, but if you have just the text they can pick an illustrator they feel fits what they would like to publish.

If you're not looking for publication, I would think $50-$100 would be more than fair, especially if it's an unknown illustrator. Just make sure you get a signed form saying you are now the copyright holder of the illustrations, so if you ever do decide to publish, you can.

Not a cent. I would find an aspiring artist who is an unknown but has talent, and I would offer them a chance to have their work published for free. But if you know the artist, or if s/he is already professional, you might want to work it out with hir.
