I would say:
more than 2000 years ago: empires in the mid-east area (today's Iraq and Iran, Jordan, Israel, Egypt and Lebanon) plus Greek
0-500 AD Roman Empire
800-1000 Roman and the Viking
approx. 1270-1370 AD The Chinese 'Yuan' Dynasty which were actually Mongols
From about 1400-1650, The Spanish, and less extent the Portugese
1700s for a few decades: The Netherlands
1750-1900 British
Since 1900 USA
(except possibly, and arguably 1936-1945 Germany, 1987-90 Japan)
Probably China from 2050

It was The British Empire. at it's peak it controlled over ¼ of the world., ranging from South America, parts of Canada, Japan, austrailia, India, etc...
Where the Romans only controled most of Europe and parts of Africa..
At the moment it'll be a toss between China, Russia, (since they are the biggest nations in terms of Land Mass), and USA since they are the sole world power, at this time.
