It purely a person specific thing than a society. Even in the modern day many persons are still sticking holding to the orthodox views about the relationship between girl and boy. You can only try to educate them and leave the rest to the time. Things are changing (at slow pace) but they are changing for good. So lets be optimistic about the future and accept and enjoy the present as it is.

You can always migrate, but I doubt that will solve your problem, as when a girl and a boy are involved, the possibility of a 'mistake' are always there.
Go ahead have a nice friendship!

Well this happens in many other countries including mine. Ppl always perceive that e guy im hanging out w is my bf?! If im not wrong India is coming out of it.. so diz kinda thingy will slowly go off.
Morever Indians tend to be more conservative so they just can imagine e fact that a gal can have a platonic rel w a guy..
Then again u shouldnt let such things upset u.. so long u know what kind of relationship ur in. Thats wat i do..:)

but i dont think its really true anymore....atleast not in most of the cities...
India is coming out of its cultural shell eventually isnt it?!
and yes....it is possible to be just friends! platonic relationship can exist at various levels even beyond friendship without any committments..
