Yes I would forgive her. I would try to empathise with her. It's not easy to bring up a child and then see another woman take him when he reaches maturity, just when you thought you were doing a good job as well!
I don't have any children (I don't intend to) but I can see how it must feel to invest so much into a person and then to feel that you have lost them. It's easy to blame the person who 'stole' them.
If this is happening to you, encourage your husband to spend time with his mother. He needs to explain to her that he is not leaving her, just moving to a different stage of his life. when she accepts this, you and her can try to become friends.
