Sorry this is long.
For most people and myself, the easiest way is after you have slept for about 4 hours (some say more but I've done it after only 2 hours). You get up out of bed for 15 minutes or so. Don't wait much longer than 30 minutes. Then you go back to bed. This is the Wake Back to Bed method or WBTB. When you go back to bed, tell yourself over and over that you are dreaming like someone said earlier. Try to keep telling yourself that as much as you can. This is basically the Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams or MILD method.
Really try to remember to do reality checks no matter how sure you are that it's real life. Look at a clock or words twice and see if they change, hold your nose and see if you can breathe through it, or try to look at your hands (I've never done the hands method but everyone says it's very hard to do). Do at least two reality checks at a time. Sometimes the words won't change or you won't be able to breathe so you might dismiss it as real life.
I had several lucid dreams before I started a dream journal, but I am doing it more often now so I have to recommend that.
Also, it's a harder method to achieve, but occasionally try the Wake Induced Lucid Dream or WILD method. I've only succeeded once and tried several times, but it's my favorite of all. You go from being awake, directly into the dreaming state. You experience sleep paralysis, hypnagogic images and sounds, and can watch your dream as it forms.
When you do reach lucidity, stay calm. Dream spinning (turn your body around in your dream) will help you if you start to wake up. However, it's common to lose lucidity when you spin and for the dream world to change so remember you're dreaming as you spin and when you stop.
It's also common to forget what you want to do when you become lucid. Many people do the stupidest things like I drew circles in the air in one of mine. You might think often throughout the day of a couple of things you want to do to help you remember.
Don't get too disappointed if you don't have lucid dreams as soon as you'd like. Just kind of knowing that you will have a lucid dream works much better than trying to force yourself to.
Please forgive any mistakes. Spell check is down, and I don't feel like checking every word. =)

When I was learning to induce lucid dreaming, I was told to tell myself before falling asleep that I would realize when I was dreaming. Then you go from there.

meditation is key and very important... surrounding yourself in a quite and still atmosphere..and slightly lite.. being in the dark only gives your mind play time.. I donno why but it does it triggers your imagination quickly... soft music with NO words... words are detracting and use aromas... and before your ready to settle in take a nice HOT bath... and relax your body.. if your body isn't relaxed your brain will do as it please...
Now.. meditation is a work in progress... the more you do it... the more you will submit yourself to suggestions meaning... what ever you are meditating on you can dream about the answer coming forth...
In spiritual lightness... always pray before all the above and right when your settled in
