Most criminals go back to crime because they get discouraged about finding decent work. I think the government should make factories and businesses that hire inmates and pay them above average wage so they can have a leg to stand on.

I was recently out of work, funny I didn't turn to crime. So now you want the government to determine who a private business hires and what they pay? Sounds pretty un-American to me.

So ince you posed a chicken and egg question, let me ask you. If criminals go back to crime because they are discouraged at finding work... what made them turn to crime in the first place?

Should there also be a government program forcing the hire and pay of people who can't find work, and think they might turn to crime for the first time because of it?

Why not simply force all business to hire everyone and dictate the pay everyone will get? Oh yeah I almost forgot this is America not the Soviet Union.

Big-E: So the war is taking 90% of our budget huh? Where did you pull that number from? The vast majority of government spending is on entitlement programs (thats welface, social security, medicade, etc. etc. for those of you in Rio Linda.). The spending for all military costs, is a small fraction of entitlement spending.

We should also make sure there is a pretty girl at the prison gates to make certain each and every one of these criminals is given a nice big hug as soon as he is released.

There are consequences to breaking laws. Some of those consequences are far reaching. Too bad. I am compassionate to a point, but it is not the job of the government, nor should it be, to employ these people. It's hard for them? Well, maybe they should have considered that BEFORE committing a crime.

I think you have it wrong, people don't steal or attack others because they don't have a job. Crime is a moral issue, some of the people in jail would go back to it whether they had a job or not. Some have learned and would try to live a better life.

I don't think we should make business hire ex-cons, they have programs in the prisons and not all of the inmates are capable of turning their lives around.

Actually, they do have programs like that, but I personally think they shouldn't.
Why is our tax dollars used to help criminals get back on their feet? You say they get discourage about finding decent work, but who's fault is that? Sure, it's true many people don't want to hire someone who has committed a serious crime, but the criminal chose the life of crime, so he or she should suffer the consequences.
Instead of helping these criminals get back on their feet, I would like to see my tax dollars going to getting their victims the help they need to learn to live with the crime that was committed against them.

The government does not provide law abiding citizens with work. They are to busy giving our jobs to foreign countries. Maybe we should all resort to crime.

Why is it the government/taxpayer's problem to hold these people by the hand and walk them through their life? Possibly we should provide them with maid service as well and a butler to wipe their behind for them too?
