It is a simple and polite greeting to begin the call. If you'd prefer saying something else, go right ahead...it is your phone after all.

Because you say hello if you are looking in a black hole and want to know if there's someone. In the beginnings of phones it seemed to the people to speak to something like a black hole.
Now it would be much better to name yourself when you get a call. That way anyone knows to who he's speaking. Always asking: Who's speaking ? is boring.

The idea is to greet the person on the end of the line..
can be hello, hey, hi, or any other religious greeting as per the preference...
Hello is easy, universal and does the job easier...

Not everyone says hello, some say " bueno" some say for example "Dr. whoever's office" . How ever one answers the phone the greeting is to let the caller know that they have answered the phone and are available to speak.

in Russia 4 example is said ALo. Alo-isn`t hello, but only a sound, like meou.
