I am a Permanent resident of the USA and I am planning to go to Japan for 9 days... One of the requirements for a Visa is a bank statement... how much does my bank account need to have so I will get approved for a visa? I only have a checking account because I am a full time college student (read: unemployed) and my parents give me money... Actually they will be paying for my trip to Japan... Do I even need a savings account? So how much do you think I should have in my account? Thanks!

**Alot of people are confused about the 'Bank Statement' so here is a link that I found: http://www.la.us.emb-japan.go.jp/e_web/e_m02_06_04.htm It said there, at the bottom part about "Tours/Sightseeing" and mentioned US Bank Statements. Thanks again.

**I think some people got confused again (BUT thanks for the answer! I appreciate it so much!)... You see, I am NOT a US Citizen, I am a Permanent Resident (Green Card)... So yeah, I don't think I can just go ahead and board a plane to Japan... Additional comments are more than welcome... If you already answered, please just add some details or send me a message! Arigatou!

********UPDATE: Just to make it clear, I am a permanent resident (Green Card) who has been in America for only 4 and a half years (meaning, I am not yet eligible to apply for American Citizenship) and I hold a Philippine Passport.

Okay, I'll add this ...!
Go here, http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/cgi-bin/right02.cgi?jump_url=data/visa/stv/req_a.htm&visa_type=Short-Term%20Visit&visa_country=Philippines&visa_fee=Gratis
Required document number 4. They actually say that "If you are not paying for your trip, a letter from the person/entity covering the cost of your trip is necessary."
It still doesn't say how much money is required, but on this page, not relating to Japan though, http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1229.html
in Angola you need $100 for each day, for Equatorial Guinea you need $2,000 total, Niger $500, and for lots of other countries you only need to show your bank statements, but it doesn't say anything about having to have money in there! You'll have to phone your nearest Japanese Embassy! You've got to go there anyway, to apply for the visa and to pick it up, but it's best if you get ALL relevant information BEFORE you travel there! PHONE them!

BTW, I thought it was obvious from your question that you were NOT an American citizen...!

.....................................

This page
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/05.html
doesn't mention bank statements. Neither does this
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/03.html#a

Maybe it's just to prove your address? An adult would be able to take in a bill for the same purpose, but as you probably don't HAVE any bills in your name a bank statement is official enough to do the job.

Anyway, all you REALLY need to get into Japan is a return ticket - if you don't have one they'll send you straight back home!
; )

Perhaps you should check out your local Japanese Embassy's web-site (if you haven't already!) It will be on this page
http://www.mofa.go.jp/about/emb_cons/over/north_a.html
If THEY don't have the right info, phone them up and ask! Maybe you could e-mail them instead, as it's not a highly classified query! It pays to be sure of why they want to see a bank statement!

If you have a US Passport, then there is no reason to show a bank statement. I have been to Japan many times is the last four years and I have never had to show a bank statement. If your passport is from another country, then I would need to know which country so I could answer your question more thoroughly. Japan is pretty open to tourists, but not to people moving there. You don't need a visa to visit Japan as a tourist, just a stamp in your passport. Tell what country your passport is from and I can help you better. As a permanent resident, you should be able to attain a US passport and it's all pretty easy from there.

Three top answerers are right! You don't need it, they don't even ask for it... cash or bank account.. your parents are your principal guarantor and 9 days is not a big deal..don't need to carry much cash or put in the bank. To make sure, ask your parents to write a note for you that they are the ones who support your travel, like a permission with their job descriptions..not really recommendable but an option..

Well, maybe you are holding a passport from another country,
if you are US citizen, you won't have much worries at all because they would not ask about it.. not sure about it , inquire your nearest Japan Embassy about this kind of visa for a permanent resident from US traveling to Japan .requirements ... if it is really needed..they have English speaking information assistance for foreigners. You must confirm all the necessary requirements..as short term visa .. financially I don't think you have worries at all.. only for those long-term visa..would be asked for this. Mention them that you are in short term..not long term visa.. this might be the reason why they ask you to provide the bank statement..even a homestay student can get a long term visa depends on her purpose of stay.. try Joriental sugggestions..look for any travel agency that would do your visa processing..they are much experienced about travelers..you can make it there..girl

good day.

maybe others didn't understand what you said you say you have US permanent residence but your not a US citizen. OK the US citizen doesn't require visa to go to any country coz they have the US passport. i think in your case you are still using your country's own passport. for example a Philippine passport. as long as i know if you can prove that you can afford the trip and your purpose is for sightseeing, since your parent live in the US i think its will be easy for you to get a visa because you have all the reasons to go back to US after a small trip in japan don't be afraid to apply now they wont deny anything from you if some papers are missing they will just ask you to complete them! good luck and see you !! LOL!!

♡You've already got lots of great info here.
If you are coming from the USA, you can stay in Japan for 90 days or less WITHOUT a visa. The USA is one of the countries that has a visa exemption arrangement with Japan. Before I got married, my hubby is Japanese, I traveled to Japan for 6 years, often staying 90 days without any type of visa or having to show any of my bank statements.

If you have 'special circumstances' of some kind, and you've still unsure, you may want to contact the Japanese Embassy as or one of the Japanese Immigration departments. They'll give you the correct information needed in your case.
http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/visa/map.htm
In principle, visa applications should be made at the Japanese embassy or consulate with jurisdiction over applicant's place of residence.
*May I ask you to post a link as to where you got your info? It just sounds wrong to me. Unless of course there is some reason that may apply to you? Are you a minor or...? Well, I hope you get everything settled and make it here to Japan trouble free. Good luck!♡

I am an American citizen and I work in Japan on a work visa. I know for a fact that bank statements are not needed for tourism or for a work visa. Maybe it is needed because of your home country.

Look at the weblink that Yozora gave you. Also contact the Japanese Embassy. This doesn't sound right to me.

This is not really an answer, but more of an inquiry.

Were you able to get a Visa? If so, how much did you at least had in your bank account?

If your passport is not US passport, you will need another documents.
Find any travel agency which hold a tour for Japan. they must be good at handling the visa.
