During a circumcision, the prepuce of the foreskin, which is the skin that covers the tip of the penis, is removed. Circumcision is usually performed on the first or second day after birth. It becomes more complicated and riskier in infants older than 2 months and in boys and men. The procedure takes only about 5 to 10 minutes. A local anesthetic (numbing medicine) can be given to the patient to lessen the pain from the procedure
Like any surgical procedure, circumcision has some risks. However, the rate of problems after circumcision is low. Bleeding and infection in the circumcised area are the most common problems. Sometimes the skin of the newly exposed glans becomes irritated by the pressure of diapers and ammonia in the urine. The irritation is usually treated with petroleum ointment (Vaseline) put directly on the area. This problem will usually lessen after a few days.
But no reason to withhold your surgery; it is basically a harmless procedure with only a few complications

Why? Why? Why?
These days there are NO hygenic reasons for circumcision if you bathe at least once a day. There will therefore be no smell. Accusations otherwise are just born out of ignorance. If you consider most of European men, for instance, are uncircumcised, don't you think they would have moved to circumcision en masse long ago if circumcision was the most hygenic and correct thing to do? Europe is not medically backward. Circumcision is widely practiced in the USA but the numbers are diminishing every year as more and more parents realise that this is just a moneymaking scam by the medical profession and an unneccessary mutilation of their male child. All major US medical councils state that circumcision is an outdated procedure.
Almost all other reasons for circumcision are now medically treatable and therefore, circumcision is unneccessary.
For women, an intact penis is DESIGNED to work better that a circumcised one because the foreskin allows for greater movement during sexual intercourse and less lubrication is required. To remove your foreskin would be like a woman removing her clitoris - unneccessary and barbaric.
It is also better for the man because his glans is soft and sensitive - the glans on circumcised penises gets thick and hard over the years and decreases sensitivity and can even lead to erection problems.

Circumcision is not necessary in 99% of the cases. If your foreskin retracts you can practice good hygiene and you will be just as clean as a guy that has been cut. Circumcision is cosmetic surgery and most insurance companies will not pay for it unless it is medically necessary. Circumcision rates have dropped to below 50% in the U.S. and will continue to drop. In states west of the Mississippi circumcision occurs in less than 35% of males.

The circumcision will have nothing to do with maturing. However if this is something you are positive you want to get....be aware of the pain and care involved with it. The longer you wait to have it done, the longer your healing time and the longer you'll have to care for the incision site.

some good answers here...
there is only one medical reason to get the foreskin cut off, and this is a skin condition called BXO
see best answer to this question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AgQhCSn7B2ul4g0LjgDGi9QjzKIX?qid=20060616225539AAr5EIh
all the other reasons are cultural, and have been characterised as 'circumstitions':

this may be hard to argue about with the authorities in your life advocating your foreskin be cut off. so the first thing is to have them read what i have linked to, and also watch these videos:

if you can, watch the circumcision episode of penn & teller. entertaining and informative.
circumcision relates to maturing in the following way. it stops a properly formed, fully functioning penis maturing.
that's right, the foreskin is not a birth defect, but rather it helps against urinary tract infections, keeps the glans as an internal organ like it should be, and the foreskin has most of the penis's nerve endings specialised for light touch, meaning that you will make the penis half as sensitive to touch and sexual pleasure if you cut off the foreskin.
additionally, the foreskin is very useful when having sex. it acts like a sleeve to help the penis slide in and out of the vagina. when you have sex (and i recommend trying it first before having it cut off just so you can make an informed decision) the foreskin rolls back over the glans and penis shaft when you insert it, making it easier to slide in. when you pull it out, the foreskin can roll back over, adding stimulation to the experience of you and her.
don't cut your foreskin off.
only about half the boys in the US get their's cut off now, due to efforts at education, finally, to stop this barbaric practice.
join the fight on y1a. start by answering my questions (they're all on foreskin mutilation) and answering other's questions about foreskin removal.
but best of all, keep questioning circumcision.
