Nuclear power is being actively pursued by many countries. France has many nuclear stations. Even Africa.
You would not even be slightly more radioactive as much less radiation is involved with a nuclear station than a coal one. Coal stations burning coal release the small amounts of radiation which then goes up in the smoke and comes down, typically in an area ten to twenty miles around the station.
Don´t listen to the anti nuclear lobby. They are just non thinking anti. Just like the people who broke up printing presses and weaving machines when mechanisation began!
Burning oil and gas is known to be a problem. The instability of oil prices is causing big problems for the world and inflationary pressures. Oil and gas will eventually run out.
Nuclear is the sensible answer to supply some of the power requirement alongside renewables.
It is likely that fusion power will eventually be made to work and that promises pollution free nuclear energy using water. That is year down the track yet though.

Just to respond to the above post, im part of the 'anti' lobby and nuclear power is definatly a worrying prospect.
Lets look at France. Over 70% of Frances power is generated by Nuclear means and so far, so good. Their the worldfs biggest exporter of Power and rely very little on foreign sources.
But its not all roses with Nuclear Power. The waste generated takes thousands of years to decompose, we still havnt got rid of any of our own, let alone provided for the future. At the moment, we simply bury the stuff. Heavily pollutive, environmentally damaging and a risk to Human life.
Secondly, the sheer cost of a Nuclear plant is over 4 times that of a coal plant. Im no fan of coal, its horrendous stuff, but spending 2 billion on a nuclear plant isnt value for money if you ask me. Britain is notorious for having risky power plants, we've all seen the articles on lax security.
Then theirs Uranium. Uranium needs to be imported people, we wil still rely on foreign fuel to power our stations. Much of Britains Uranium is mined in Africa, so instead of the middle east, we will have to deal with African nations. Its not a free source y'know, it just changes our dependancy
I simply believe in Britain that green is the way forward. Its cheap, we're the luckiest country in the world for having the best climate to use the stations,..surely theirs no contest? Dirty, risky Nuclear fuel, or replenishable green fuel?

I remember the "Split wood, not atoms" bumper stickers. If we had followed that advice there wouldn't be a tree left on the planet. Then Al Gore wouldn't have anything to hug except Tipper.
