Because it gets a pay-out of some sort; such as pleasure or reward. Animals are also that way. Habits are of course not always good for us. One example would be drinking too much. Some animals will only eat things that taste good but might not be good for them and eventually die from lack of nutrition. Humans do that too, but the taste is pleasurable and the habit continues. Humans however can employ common sense (sometimes) and break the pattern and do what is better for them. Some habits are harmless. Some are deadly...

the neurons in your brain connect and reconnect as you use it. Once a at a certain age, the number of new connections decrease dramatically, making the old connections become more important as no new venues are possible.
The saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" applies to humans as well as dogs.
