We do not have to go to a priest. When Jesus died, the veil in the temple that the ark of the covenant was behind was torn in two. Before that, only the priests could go into the room that held the ark, and they prayed for the sins of the people. When the veil was torn, it signified that God was among the people, and we no longer have to go to confession. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." All we have to do is ask. Our sins are between us & God. There is no longer a middle-man, so to speak.

I believe God forgives through prayer only. Who is a priest??? He is just a person like you, with sin like you. If you just talk to God and tell Him you're sorry, you will be forgiven. I would NEVER confess to a priest. I'm a Lutheran, and we say confession in church as a group, out loud, (it's a prayer) and when we do it, our pastor turns around with the rest of us and says it as well, as he realizes he is just a person, same as us.

Here's what I believe. You can confess through a priest. That's his job, afterall, to help guide us to heaven. Though I believe confession is much deeper then that. It isn't about form or tradition, but rather about recognising, and repenting a sin. If you sincerely ask for forgiveness, and feel in your heart a need for penance, then forgiveness will be granted to you. Confess to whomever you like, your best friend, your mother, the family dog, as long as you have a penitant spirit, that's all that matters.

the Bible says in 1 john 1:9, 'if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness' it also mentions in a slightly different context in hebrews 10:4,11 that the actions of priests are ineffectual for actually pardoning the sins of a person.. priests were used in the time before Christ to make sacrificial offerings on behalf of the people, but when Jesus Christ died on the cross, He became the sacrifice and fulfilled the requirement for those sacrifices, so the actions of the priests are no longer necessary

priests?! They can only pray for your sins and they are not the ones to forgive our sins or not only tru confession to a priest can sins be forgiven. IF you want to talk to God, talk to him directly and a mediator isn't necessary! have a genuine prayer..

The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."

When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.

Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.

With love in Christ.

Nowhere in the bible does it say you need to pray to a priest since Christ died for you. When Christ died, he provided a direct connection to Our heavenly Father. Pray directly to Him. He hears and answers every prayer. If you confess your sins, He is faithful and JUST to forgive you and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
(did Catholicism tell you that? tsk. tsk.)

In the whatevers creed we always read in church it states very clearly that we acknowledge baptism forgives us our sins so I wonder why confession is actually necessary. Otherwise what happens to people that die before a confession can be obtained?

Can you have peace in your mind after doing all the sins under the sun just because you go and pray along with w priest ??

I don't think so, it will always be at the back of your mind and will be haunting you for the rest of your life.
