I see your point. Here's what will happen on my clock: I will buy the kid a cell phone as early as age eight BUT it will be prepaid and it will only have enough money on it to make emergency phone calls.
Especially because there's some evidence that they may cause brain tumors if used excessively. I'd like to minimize use for that reason especially.
But now that I think about it, I think I can buy a cell now, put $0 on it, and she'll still be able to dial 911. So she'll have it just for safety reasons for now.
Also, later in adolescence I'll have her earn her own minutes via a part-time job. And even then I'll have strict rules about how frequently she can use the thing.
Hope this helps.

no but we all do, what if the cell phone is one of those that only has 4 functions home, school, 911 and parent at work, then the kid is not spoiled. I was given many things when I was a kid and thought my family was rich, then when I grew older I found out that we were poor. Giving to your kids is not spoiling them as long as they appreciate what they have.

Oh i'll spoil mine, 'cause I didn't get spoilt. I'll do what's right for them, but I won't hold things from them just because of spite.
My sisters got mobile phones when they were 7 and 8. They're a useful way of keeping in touch, and sending texts or whatever with their friends. It was a lot better to give them old mobiles that we wern't using anymore and tell them to use their own money (from birthdays or whatver) to put credit on them than to have them calling and texting friends from our phones. They're responsible for their own credit.

My children have a mobile phone - but it's not to spoil them - it's to keep track of where they are at all times - keeps my blood pressure down. My kids don't even want it because they don't have anyone else to call

The way I see it is, I lived my entire childhood/adolescence without a cell phone. The same goes for my parents, grandparents, etc. Kids are spoiled today without a shadow of a doubt and the worst thing is that the parents of today are encouraging it!!!!

A mobile phone at 8 is not always wrong. It just depends on what you intend your child to do with it. I mean it's ok if it just uses it in an emergency.

First, i'd recommend seeing in case your service has a service the position you could take care of their get proper of entry to- T-cellular has kin allowances. you could set it up in case you want to in common words use it at particular situations, you could set it up in case you want to in common words contact particular people and/or block particular people, etc. A uncomplicated characteristic without the kin Allowances is having the ability to visual exhibit unit their use- i'll work out what time a message replaced into despatched/gained, who it replaced into to/from (the quantity), etc. the regulations I genuinely have with my little ones is they won't be able to use it till after their college artwork and chores are done on a daily basis (we homeschool). Then, there's a cutoff time each evening. they don't look to be allowed to delete any messages in any respect, and at any time i'll ask to work out the phone. Neither of them have smart telephones (yet), so with that ought to come extra themes and regulations for sure. i do not examine each message, yet I do often times leaf by ability of. The iPhone 5 also has regulations available in the settings. Create a regulations passcode and then you will be able to have some administration over their use (and a good backup so that they won't be able to go around the cellular regulations with the help of making use of WiFi). truthfully, because of their historic previous of sexting i'd not enable them to have smartphones in any respect or i'd make it the position they won't be able to textual content anybody yet you, their father, one yet another. not in common words is it purely morally incorrect, yet their taking images, even of themselves, is production toddler porn. in the experience that they deliver it, it really is allotting toddler porn. etc. And, they are typically charged for possessing toddler porn, no matter if it really is images of themselves or images that were despatched to them. in addition they don't know how in each single position- and how lengthy- those images should be utilized. it really is a very serious remember.
