Ach this is easy. Picnic in the park or kids love to eat in the garden. If they are really young you could have a teddy bears picnic. Museums - I dont know where you are from but Edinburgh has a Museum of Childhood and there may be something like that close to you. Check your local paper for summer events. In Glasgow this week end we have a River Festival which is free. Look out for money off coupons for days away. These can take some of the ouch out of paying for a day away. Country parks are fun too. Family rail tickets or even cheaper take the bus somewhere with a beach or even cheaper go for a cycle. Take a fishing rod (the cheaper the better) and stop off, eat your picnic and fish for an hour or two. How could I forget about swimming. Hope I've given you one or two ideas. PS mine are all grown up now bliss!!!

depends on the kids...... The way we manage our kids over the holiday is to plan everything..... The wife and I sit down on a Sunday evening and plan the entire following week during the summer. We make sure we both have time to ourselves and that the kids see us both. We go for picnics on the bikes, there is a local wood to "find interesting things" in (a little planning means we make a game of it finding leaves, plants and even the smell of wild garlic was part of the game once). We go swimming if it is hot, lots of games in the garden.... Just a little thought keeps the kids happy and quiet.... Good luck

If you have a garden, then encourage them to spend as much time outdoors. A cheap paddling pool, a big cardboard box which they could paint to look like a house, or anything else their imagination comes up with. Maybe encourage a wall chart, so that if they help out with chores, tidy up toys after playing with them, to give Mum some free time, she can then take them on a treat eg the park, or if they have been really good, maybe buy a DVD that they choose, encourages them to be responsible and they will feel better "earning" their rewards and appreciate them more.

This makes me sound 500 years old but here goes...
When I was young we went to parks, to the beach, to each others houses, cycling etc. & none of it cost us anything.
I have noticed that during these school holidays there are not many kids out & about at all.
Nowadays kids want to sit at their playstations & computers all day. No wonder we are becoming a fat nation like USA.

Walks,
picnics
bubble blowing
kite flying - Tesco do really good kites for 87p that fold up tiny!!
hula hoops
paints,
home made playdough - google search recipe - kids could help too, economy flour etc.
bug hunts in the garden
games from charity shops
treasure hunts with clues and tiny surprises
rock/pebble painting - pinch a handful of pebbles from the beach and bring them home for the kids to make pet rocks!
paddling pool
make dolls stuff from your cereal boxes and yogurt pots
check out your local paper for ideas - farms often do corn mazes etc.
Give them a flower pot to paint and then grow some seeds - especially something they could eat at the end. Lettuce, cherry tomato (from the pips out of the ones you buy anyway?)
press flowers
make jam from fruit you get from the hedgerows later in the year.
Endless possibilities really.

picnic's in the forest are always a good one (come to the Newforest Down south if your fairly close.... its beautiful!!) hire DVD's from the video shop, bake cakes with them, take them to a pub that has a bonce castle or activity area for them to play in, take them ice skating or fishing, or even book there a horse riding lesson/ride! go to the beach if the weathers nice, get a paddling pool set up in the garden for them..... there's quite a few things to do with the kids to keep them occupied, but it depends whats avalible to you.... goodluck!
