According to the Architectural Graphic Standards (Ramsey/Sleeper), the space taken up by 4 people to march/stride together (like in a parade) is 3505mm from the front toes of the person in front to the back heel of the person at the back.

If we assume this to be based on the average male, and that stride length is proportionate to the hip height (the height of the ball & socket joint of the femur to pelvis), we can work out the stride for the average woman.

Divide the average female hip height by the average male hip height and convert that into percentage. Divide the 4 man march distance by 4 to get the stride of the average man and multiply that by the hip height percentage.

Average female hip height: 890mm
Average male hip height: 950mm
Average 4 man stride: 3505mm

So the average female stride is
= [(890/950) x 100%] x (3505/4)
= 93.7% x 876.25
= 821mm or approximately 32.3 inches.

Or get 1000 women of various sizes and measure their strides, then work out the average.

It seems to me, the longer the race distance you train for, the shorter your stride becomes. Therefore, being a marathoner, my stride is down to ablout 3 inches. Just kidding.
