I didn't want to but it was massive (you know the sort - I could actually count the hairs on its legs!) and it was heading towards my bed so I had no time to fetch the hoover (my usual weapon of choice). I took no pleasure in killing the spider especially as it made a revolting crunching sound as it squished and I then had to clear up the mess (ewww). Any suggestions as to how I could deal with a similar situation in the future?? There is no way I could pick up a spider of those dimensions with my bare hands.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! my worst nightmare !

When we lived in a wooden bungalow ,many years ago ,
and my husband worked on late, shifts.
I would sit in the lounge waiting for him to get home .

These enormous spiders, used to run across the linoleum and you could actually hear the clatter of their feet!

i could not pick them up and i could not squish them either .

so i had several jam jars , and when Mrs spider came towards me, i would trap her in the upside down Jar .
when my long suffering husband got home, i was surrounded by jars, each with a monster scrabbling around in it.

he would cheerfully, slide a sheet of paper under the jar and carry the spider out .
He then released it into the garden .
He often had to make as many as 8 trips in one night !!

The wretched spiders found their way back indoors for
a repeat performance the following evening ,

I can only think they enjoyed the adventure !!!!!

LOL! it still makes me shudder..

you were very brave to manage to squish that spider....

Put a glass over the spider so it can't move, then slip a piece of thin but strong card under the glass, trapping the spider inside. Then take it to an open window and fling it as far as you can out into the open air.

You're very brave - I couldn't kill one! And I certainly wouldn't hoover it up as then it's inside the hoover! Yuk!

You can also buy a gadget which will trap spiders (similar to the glass solution above).

there's a certain type of Raid bug killer that lasts up to 4 weeks. we have a big problem with spiders where i live, so about once a month i clean my entire room from top to bottom and then break out the raid and spray every corner, window edge, door frame, everything... spiders get in through the door and windows (and sometimes bad closets) so spray those spots a lot. also spray the corners and stuff. the spiders won't cross lines that you've sprayed. it sounds crazy, i know, my mom makes fun of me for it, but it keeps them out and if you hate them as much as me, then you'll understand. just make shure you air out the room for a few hours because you don't want to be getting high off of bug killer, i don't think that could be very good for you.

I sympathise. I normally use the hoover as well if my bf isn't to hand (who squishes them). I don't like to kill them but I'm petrified. The other day I had one on my back door step and I tried to flick it outside but it came running towards me instead! So up the hoover it went.

I have bought this gismo that you plug in and it supposed to send and signal through the wiring that spiders don't like and will avoid your house. I have noticed that I do get less spiders and when I do get them they are smaller so not so scary.

I've got the peststop one. I didn't get from here (can't remember where but so you know what I'm on about. http://www.pestcontrolshop.co.uk/acatalog/pest-repellers-for-the-home.html

Interesting how if its a spider, consensus says kill it with extreme prejudice but if it was a fluffy wuffy bunny wabbit, you'd be a monster, but I digress

If its really harping on your conscience and you can't sleep at night, get one of these or somehting like it.

Or buy some huge boots and lay into it with the help of gravity and mass. The last thing to go through its mind will be your foot.

My friend used to have a cat which she just held up to the spider and it ate it. I agree though, they are absolutely repulsive and i hate them. I usually suck them up with the hoover attachments, but often they can crawl back out which is a sickening thought. Aquire a next door neighbour who can catch them in a glass for you and flush them down the toilet or chuck the damn thing out the window.

Put a glass over it and slide a piece of paper under it, then put it out the window or something. Or do that but put toilet paper under it, then send the toilet paper out the window. You get rid of the spider and the spider gets a magic carpet ride.
