Ho Chi Minh City was known by its original Khmer inhabitants as Prey Nokor... Prey Nokor means "forest city" or "forest land" in Khmer...
Before French colonization, the Vietnamese name of Saigon was Gia Dinh... In 1862, the French discarded this official name and adopted "Saïgon"...
After the fall of South Vietnam in 1975, the now ruling communist government renamed the city after the pseudonym of their leader Hồ Chí Minh.

Ho Chi Minh City, population of about 3.5 million people in the city proper and nearly 6 million within the surrounding districts, is the economic and modern cultural center of Vietnam today. After the reunification of Vietnam in May of 1975, Saigon was formally renamed Than Pho (meaning city) Ho Chi Minh after the revolutionary leader of the communist party, but many Vietnamese still refer to the city as Saigon.
