Theres no such thing as free. They say downloading is free but they charge you a so called "membership fee". Same with movie downloads, i was told they were free but had to pay a £38 yearly membership fee. Still cheaper than buying dvds and cds i suppose.

There is such a thing as free: use your radio. If you must have digital copies, record from there and make your own.

Online, free and legal is hard to come by. Legal and DRM-free is even more difficult.

Probably you're going to get a lot of answers pointing you to P2P services. That's fine, but be careful. The RIAA and their international friends are pretty sue-happy these days. Most of their arguments are poor or badly wrong, their business models are a solid thirty years behind the times, and they generally froth a lot and act like total asses, but even stupidly bad legal action can still cause problems for you.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but there's a lot to be said for paying for music. The artist sang or played it, the studio recorded it, the publisher got it out there. 95% of what came out of the process may be trash (which is why CDs suck), but that 5% that is actually worth listening to is worth paying for. If no one pays for anything, the system will eventually break down.

Because nothing is free.. And your downloading an artists work you should pay for it. It usually costs less than a single..I pay 99¢ for each song I get on itunes..Worth it to me because then I know I am not putting a virus on my computer from the "free" sites...

I pay NO membership fee for itunes..I only pay for the songs I buy..Music video's are 1.99
