The word THESAURUS is from the Greek word THESAUROS and it means a treasury or storehouse, a book containing a store of knowlege, a dictionary of words and phrases. A thesaurus helps you avoid repetition in your writing and helps you find a word for an idea you have in mind. You can use it to increase your vocabulary as the typical thesaurus has synonyms for more than 100,000 words.

Lexicon is commonly used in reference to a special vocabulary.

"Thesaurus" is nothing more than a name for a book of synonyms and antonyms, just as "dictionary" is the name for a book of words and their definitions.
