I believe it is a state of mind, that we can control... although I have never been able to for myself...Abraham Lincoln said "People are about as happy as they make up their mind to be"

a few years ago i might have said, happiness is being in a perfect relationship, or having the perfect family, or being really pretty but none of that is true.
i just got out of a really deep depression and the entire time i was searching for something that would make me happy. i thought if i had a boyfriend, things would all be different, or if i lost those 5 more pounds, my life would change.
but after going away to college and changing my life i realize that none of that is true. happiness is being okay with how things are and accepting your situation and looking at getting a boyfriend or losing weight as something that would be nice, but would not make or break you as a person.
you really just have to be able to look at your life and say "all in all, i think my life is pretty good" and leave it at that. if you have more things in life to smile at than not...then you should be happy.

Real happiness is a choice because no matter how down we are, if we are only to see them as learning experiences, we'd see that they will soon be over. We will see that as soon as the sadness go, we'd appreciate what it really means to be happy. Happiness is within, if we only learn how appreciate even the smallest of things, we can find peace and contentment wherever we may be. :)

Getting more than you expect. On the way to work, I pass a horribly crippled leper woman, sitting on the overpass, begging for coins. Once I had not coins, so gave her a Rp 20,000 note ($2). A big smile broke out on her face. In spite of the pain and uggliness of her affliction, she was at that moment truly happy. And I was glad that I could bring happiness to her.
A smile may be your only reward, but its memory may last forever.
