Unfortunately, I totally understand what you mean...recently I answered a question and one of the other members jumped down my throat simply because she didn't agree with what I had to say. I admit everyone is entitled to an opinion, and the fact that the first amendment states we have freedom of speech, but this does not entitle anyone to force their opinions on others. I think it is OK to stay an opinion, but to get so boldly offensive and insist that one's own opinion is the supreme answer/statement is not right. I don't force my beliefs on you and you should not force them on me, note that this is very different from me stating an opinion that you may or may not agree with.
I think some people feel so strongly towards one way or the other that they aren't able to open themselves to other points of views and opinions, thus, causing them to jump down people's throats trying to convince them otherwise. I have to admit it is very rude and annoying when people do this, but it does happen and the only thing I can say is... keep in mind everyone is entitled to their own opinion, some people may agree with your opinion and some may not agree, but regardless of that one cannot force their opinions on others and then continue to live in such a democracy where the first amendment gives its people the freedom of speech.
Also, another thing to keep in mind is that on the internet it is harder to interpret exactly what the question or answer is saying unless it is very thorough...and not many people are clear, concise and thorough in regards to asking or answering a question. This can confuse the read and sometimes cause them to take offense, and reply rudely. Yet, keep in mind everyone has the choice to answer or not to answer the question being asked. So, I don't seem to understand why people get so ruffled up when they answer a question they don't like, or feel extremely strongly about...but whatever the reason is they should keep in mind that everyone is entitled to an opinion, regardless of if they like it or not.

I think that you have answered your own question, if and when you offend someone they tend to react in the way you described. Some people could learn just to ignore the questions that they find offensive, but they don't. When you word a question that you believe will offend some, say that in your question like " If you believe in god don't answer this question" or some such warning.

I think people get upset when they are caught off guard by the question. If you mislead people into the question, that also means younger kids are possibly viewing content they shouldn't be. If you put in the subject line that it's offensive, then people know they are about to view something offensive.

well, anyone is free to answer anything so i think that some people see opportunities to express thier opinions and thus jump at the chance. i haven't had it really happen to me but i see it alot and ur right, its not so nice. so it bothers me a bit when people find it so nessesary to preach thier beliefs even when its not appropriate or sensative. but in some ways, i think it makes yahoo!answers what it is. a huge, massive, free-for-all with opinions and suggestions and debates flying all over the place :)
