its not getting gas. I am completely ignorant about cars, but could it be a fuel pump or someone else suggested a computer chip (for what I don't know). Anyway the car has been running perfectly and just did this once last night, sat for ten minutes then it started. It just did it again and he is stuck about 1 mile from home. All I know is its not the battery, it just goes on for a second and dies...........

First turn the key on but dont try to start, listen for a click and hum sound coming from the fuel pump. (IN FUEL TANK) If you hear this the pump is most likely working, if not it may be the pump.
I would change the fuel filter especially if its never been done or if you cant remember the last time you did.
Next step would be to take the CONTROL MODULE off and have it tested at Autozone or Orielly's. Its free. Located: UNDER HOOD, PASSENGER SIDE, FRONT ENGINE AREA, FRONT OF RADIATOR, DRIVER SIDE OF HEADLIGHT HOUSING, MOUNTED IN FINNED CONTROL MODULE HOLDER.
ON SHOCK TOWER.
What happens a lot of times is the module gets hot and breaks down, causing intermittent failure.
If none of these test get you any results it may be the actual engine computer. I would have this diagnosed by a repair shop.

out of gas? sometimes the gage is broke...
fuel filter gets clogged and doesn't allow fuel to the intake fast enough.
and yes could be a fuel pump...you can get an after market pump for 10 bucks that is electric...mounts to the sidewall
could be a chip but in 1990 ford wasn't that smart...your safe

check his alternator......maybe the injections or hoses are clogged... my car did that before....you can start it again, but it may quit in a minute....it was the alternator....and the fuel and carb filter...maybe it's to dirty no air is getting in there....
