Check fluids after your car has been resting for a while and the engine is cool.

At rest. The engine should be off for at least a few minutes before you check it.

check oil after its at operating temperature liquids will expand as they heat up. i prefer to change my oil after it has cooled off some, but not cold \, warm oil will drain faster.
