It is common belief that the king Ashoka's kingdom has extended all the way till Afganistan. Again it is hard to tell what is the boundary of India. The country of Gandhar (of Gandhari) referred in Mahabharatha is supposed to be Kandahar in Afganistan. Afganistan was also portion of ancient India...
Normally people used to migrate and move towards tropical areas from the North and try to attack the people living there. Basically this is a tendency to get habitable land. Later they found that they can get wealth also by doing that. Nobody will move North to the cold climate -- look, now also nobody will move to Siberia. Above all the poplulation in those areas are so thin there. Indians who ived in warmer climates would never survive in those freezing temperatures.

India was a great nation from the beginning ,it was one of the most richest region on the world map.
Ppl here were peace loving and didnt maintain huge armies generally ,and also the states were very small during some periods.
Its during those divided periods that the conqurers have come into India.
We never invaded other countries jus because India was land of plenty and there was no need 2 go to other places lookin for riches ,comforts etc.It was all there in the home land itself.
Also the cultural gentlesness prevented it from being an aggressor.
Even when now India is one of the strongest countries in terms of Military power in the world, there is no plan in the wildest of dreams of any Indian Political head to conquer the neighbouring nations.
It has nuclear policy of minimum deterrance and of no first use clearly shows the peace loving nature of the country.
There is no country neighbouring to India which feels India is a threat to their security even with the immense power of its military.
This kind of decency can be shown only by the most cultured people.
But often ppl tend to take the decency and patience of India as the cowardness and weakness of the country.

To my knowledge there were no major campaigns from India towards the North, as the nations and tribes who lived there were widely seen as inferior and for centuries vassals of the Mogul empire. Those armies who attacked from the North were usually out on a mission of conquest. It started with Alexander (the Great) who just went further East after he had beaten the largest military power of the age, the Persian empire. Later the Romans followed in his footsteps, but with far less success. Then came the Moguls, and after them there were (unsuccessful) attempts by the Russians, while the British, who did succeed eventually, came across the sea and therefore from the South.

i completely agree with little Bishma about the climatic difference and the tendency to migrate towards warmer climate..
but to say india had not attacked others then it would be tottaly untrue... first of all indians were so preoccupied with fighting their neighbours that that they had no time.second allmost all causes of war were for ecnomical reasons. there were neither wealth nor habitable land in the north an attck was not viable..
but soth indian kings have attacked overseas.
the Cholas Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Cholas had big navies and they had conquered srilanka, thailand ,parts of malay peninsula

India was one of the first civilized societies in the ancient world.
they were blessed with temperate beautiful climate, rich soil and natural resources.
This gave them time to develop luxury and riches.
The countries to the north are rugged and relatively poor in resources. On top of that, they are populated with some of the fiercest fighting nomadic peoples the world has ever seen.
Plus competing faction of ancient India used these fierce nomads as mercenaries and fodder for their local ambitions.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The high caste Brahmins of today are the decendents of invading Aryans who displaced the earlier Dravidians and others.
India has been invaded constantly since before it was India.
