In the years leading up to world war II as Germany fell under the shadow of fascism, a lot of jews came to Aemerica because it was one of the only countries accepting them. A lot of those jews were very well educated and they were a tremendous benefit to the USA, and brought an intellectual and technological edge to the country that it is still riding on today. Many of the people who were responsible for developing nuclear weapons, for example, were jewish scientists. They had to leave Germany (or Poland or Romania whatever the case may be) where they would have otherwise made their contribution, but the USA reaped the benefits of their smarts instead, not just from the weapons they invented, but from the schools they started and the contribution to English becoming such an impoartant language in the world.
In fact, many countries decide to eradicate their intelligentsia when they want to change over to a new regime. It's because they want to get rid of the establishment that went before and educated people often represent conservative interests within a society. Russia did it in their revolution and they have produced very little great literature or made any important theoretical discoveries for the last 100 years because of that. France did it when they had their revolution more than 200 years ago, although they've had enough time to recover since then. China did it to Tibet when they invaded that country; they killed off all the people who carried the wisdom of the society in the hopes that the people would forget their culture and their past.
The list could go on and on. And historically, when smart people have realized it's time to get out or go to the chopping block, they have come to America, which has been a huge advantage to the USA.
But for the most part at this point in time I have to tell you I think there are an awful lot of really really stupid Americans out there. It boggles the mind...

There are smart and stupid people in any society. For all its flaws, we do have a universal education system, and easy access to information for all people. It is true that some people don't make effective use of this opportunity, with embarassing results: just watch 'Jaywalking' on the Tonight Show some time.

Europeans like to brag about how their students do better on certain tests - without mentioning that in Europe only college bound students take them but in the US everyone does. I'll put the average blue collar American against the average 'early school leaver' chav any day of the week.

Actually, I don't think Americans are that much 'smarter' on average, so much as our society gives people more opportunity to make use of their clever (and not so clever) ideas.

no seriously. its because there is a mix of every culture here in the US that its not difficult to find a smart person or 2 or a lot in the mix. some ppl strive to learn and understand and others just stay stupid.

its the same as in every other country in the world. as americans we have the opportunity to voice out our opinions so more of our ideals are shown.

We are, we're not, whatever. Intelligence and stupidity run the gamet, they slice through the cross section of the entire world. It doesn't matter where you're from or what/who you are, intelligence and stupidity exist everywhere. There are and always have been intelligent and stupid people in every society. Every society has, had always had, and always will have intelligent people, stupid people, and everything in-between.
