It is all because the rest of the world allows them.

Probably not answering the original question, but to put a few of the facts straight without going off topic.
America was paid by the British to help with the efforts in Europe. All the planes and boats they built were paid for by the British or swapped for long leases on Military bases in the UK and all over the British Empire (which was vast at the time).
The Americans only really joined the war when they were forced by Japan to enter. If Japan had realised how succesful the attack on Pearl Harbor would be they could have invaded all along the Western coast of the USA, L.A. and San Fransisco would have become a war zone.
Americas economy was in tatters before the war, the money from the British and then the huge industry which came about from building military equipment made a lot of Americans rich and powerful and till this day America needs wars to keep that economy booming.
Most people would call George Bush an evil tirant.
The only reason he knew that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction is because the Americans sold it too them (but to be fair so did the British) before the invasion of Kuwait.
Now for the answer:
The price of Petrol or gas is still too cheap in America, maybe if it was more expensive they would be encouraged to use less. (Don't know why they can't drive diesel cars and trucks)
But don't know if it would make much difference as if you look at any major town in the UK, most people are driving 4x4s of some description nowadays or Jags or BMWs anyway and we pay equivilant to about 8dollars per gallon there.

I'm not quite sure either. I think if you read some of the answers you'll get an idea though. Like supporting 90% of the world? Where do these losers get their facts? Now, not all Americans are like this and I try to tell myself this everyday because it gets so hard to put up with such arrogance and stupidity. They don't know that the rest of the world pays higher prices for their gas/petrol and those who do probably don't care. I think sometimes they forget they're not the only people on this planet.

We did it first (automobile, planes, etc), as in most things. Our GDP is almost 6 times the amount the entire U.K. puts out each year. Take that to the bank and complain, why don't ya!
And it's not "God"-given...it's "military"-given
I'd address your English denunciation, but you really shouldn't ask more than one question at a time...
__________
Update:
Check your "bloody" facts, bloke. Gasoline (long for "gas") was coined almost 30 years before the term "petrol" was ever used. Another reason why we don't call gas petrol, is simply because we associated that term to mean "unrefined" petroleum a long, long time ago. After all, not all petroleum can be used as a fuel in an engine, hence the reason for distinguishing it with the use of another term (gasoline).

We don't "need" big engines....most cars over here have 6 cylinder engines (the average car/small truck). But when they started making the classic cars of the 1950's...those came standard with V8 engines. We went to smaller engines for a couple of decades, with the exception of "muscle" cars like the Mustang, Barracuda, Firebird, Camaro, etc. But once again...."bigger is better", and now a lot of the SUV's, newer larger luxury cars and trucks come once again, with the V8 engines as standard.
Americans have always loved powerful vehicles. For me, I'm no exception....loving the feel on the road of a powerful car beneath me, driving the highway in something that can outrun and outrace anyone else.... My first car was a Buick Skylark, baby blue power finish bottom, white hard top, 1961 model with a V8. I was 15 years old...and to this day, LOVE the bigger engines (although I drive a 6 cylinder car for the sake of saving gas.)
So as for assuming we "need" them, we don't....it's what we want. And I agree with you...people do complain a lot about the price of gas...I pay it, and never worry, because I feel if I wanted that kind of power once again on the road, I have to be willing to pay the price. Maybe I'm the exception...who knows?
As for speaking English properly....LOL...we're AMERICANS...and to us, we speak it exactly like we learned, which IS properly. And you just HAVE to be British....because I know quite a few Brits here (they're working here on contract-Savannah Georgia area) and they say the exact same thing! They think it's their duty, to God and Country, to teach us how to speak "Proper English".... I've got the one-up on them...I grew up in England, and already know how! :)

Because God Blesses America. Not MAY God Bless America, just God Bless America. It's a given! He blesses it and it's oversized cars, and oversized roads, and oversized food.
Everything that America do they believe is their God-given right. Let's face it, they have to at least make an effort to feel morally superior considering their entire country is based on the extermination of an entire indigenous people. In fact, in order to morally justify much of American pillaging in the rest of the world, an attitude has had to still have lingered since those days of early 'settlers' since those days of slavery, a tiny, back-of-the-mind attitude, that hints that the rest of the world are 'uncivilized', 'not quite like us' with far fewer morals, more prone to 'barbarity', hence less worthy of the blessing of Jesus Christ.
Why should the barbarians have the more mineral-rich areas of the Earth? America are the 'moral leaders' of the world, saving it from its own barbarity, champions of democracy and freedom, and you can be damn sure they'll take their reward!

My god (I'm polytheistic, no "God-given rights to crap on people" beliefs here), that's what I would like to know. Sadly, a populace is only as good as its education and exposure to the world around it. And more sadly still, this nation has foundered in materialism, sacrificed knowlege for keeping up with the latest trend, been spoonfed bland bowls of data you could hardly call knowlege. Most of us haven't been taught proper English.
I don't drive a gas-guzzling SUV. I value fuel economy in my car--and the way I look at it, I don't need a V8 dual overhead cam engine to make my car fly down the road--all I need is unfettered access to my gas pedal and an empty lane stretching out before me and I can go plenty fast for my taste. The problem I have with the price of gas over here is that it rose so suddenly. I don't know how the price of gas fluctuates over there, but I remember the night it went from 99 cents a gallon to $1.28. In the middle of the night. The price of gas per gallon since then has jumped at a higher and faster than poorer Americans can cope with.
Gooner Jim, you're pretty damned ignorant yourself. You'd fit right in here in the United States of America. You know, here I am getting my hackles up about the way most of you are talking trash about my country. But I just realized something--you only know what you see. And I see (and b&!^@) every day about nearly the same things you're b&!^@ing about. I knew when George Dubbya Bush started his crazy cowboy s&^% we were perilously close to being (rightfully) branded a nation of fools and belly-button lint chasers. Well, you people are right--to a degree. This nation is so self-absorbed it's disgusting. But I implore you to look through the cracked windows of this madhouse and see that there are people trapped inside who are as sane and rational as you are, people who don't have big American egos to match their gas-guzzling SUV's.

it's not the president, it's been going on for years.
They're an ignorant, and frankly stupid race
we support 90% of the world one of them says?? How on earth do THEY support the rest of the world.... doesn't the rest of the world in effect support them, by buying their goods? The only countries they support are the oil producers! The yanks don't need gas guzzling 7 litre cars, 24/7 air con, and leave porch lights on in the blaring sun as about 60% of them do.... that's what annoys me - wasteful!

Because we aren't gouged with the taxes the Europeans are. It doesn't cost any more to make gas in the US as it does anywhere else, yall just give more to the government than we do. And we learned the proper way of spelling and speaking over the years.

As Americans we have earned the right, by bailing Europe (and the rest of the world) out of a major jam TWICE during the last century, to use whatever the hell we want to, and the rest of you be damned... and my English is nearly perfect, thank you very much. AND I drive a four cylinder. :-P

Who decides what our fair share is? Not YOU. junior.
And to that other idiot, Americans ARE NOT A RACE, stupid, We're a polyglot (look it up) of ALL races. We are a people, if you will. (And even if you won't)
Finally, if we DO get a bigger share, it's because we DESERVE IT. Don't confuse the American people with American politicians.
We've never given the world a Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Napoleon, Popes, Saladin, etc. No bloodthirsty dictators out of America...Dope.
