Doctors work long hard hours. It's harder to be a doctor, with med school, internships, residency. People call your house in the middle of the night because they think it's your job to help them 24/7. They deal with lawsuits, insurance companies, and basically have to run their own business. After they pay their business bills, sometimes they don't make all that much.

Engineers go to work regular hours, make lots of money and they don't get calls in the middle of the night from projects they are working on. Sometimes engineers don't make much either. My husband works at a place that builds big trucks and the engineers there don't make much more than $50,000 a year.

A doctor has more job security and higher earning capacity. Engineering is more hot & cold -- sometimes there's a lot of demand for engineers and other times they're in the unemployment line.

Doctor's salaries are higher, but they don't start making these salaries for 12+ years (Pre Med, Med School, Residency & Internship). Engineers can start after 4 years.

Engineers tend to have regular job hours. And when they're done, they tend to be done. Doctors on the other hand tend to work 8-5 and then have call every four days and one weekend a month. Call means that if any patient in the practice group goes to the hospital, the doctor on call must go to the hospital and admit them. It's a real pain and it limits your schedule.

Ultimately, you will have to decide which fits your life expectations best. I recommend you talk to some doctors and engineers and find out what they think of their profession.

I think "better" could mean a lot of things... Financially, I think both professions can give you a steady flow of income... As for the lifestyle, I think being a doctor is more demanding than being an engineer. The bottom line is, both are good professions that can provide you with a good quality of life, so now, it all depends on what you REALLY want to do... especially in medicine as it will demand alot of time and work...

DO what you love!

A doctor will make more money than an engineer. A lot more, depending on the specialty.
Depends on what you consider a good life. Choose the field that you like better.
