Yeah, I'd go for a smaller car, especially with gas prices. Toyota, Honda, and VW are probably some of the better ones to consider. I've personally owned a VW Jetta, a Honda Civic, and currently own a Toyota Corolla. All have incredible gas mileage and are in general pretty good cars mechanically. I had a few problems with the Jetta, but it was an older model (94). Hope that helps!

Somthing cheap but, realiable. Because it's your first car the chances of you wrecking it are greater. Be smart and save your money untill you know that you are a good driver and that your driving habits and skills are good. Then, with some good driving experence under your belt. Then purchase the nice car. In the mean time you will probaly save money on car insurance with the cheaper older car. Because insurance rates are sky high for younger people with nice new expensive cars and maybe even unfair. So save some money on a car that is reliable which will probaly be somthing older and cheaper and maybe higher on miles. But, after some time passes and you proof your driving skills worthy then let them buy you the Hummer. Or what ever floats your boat or theirs -AKA- There Buying.--------- professional driver- drive defensive -drive smart-drive safe and HAVE FUN.

A Honda civic would be a good choice, especially considering you have the option of getting a hybrid version and Honda cars have a good reputation for reliability. Also, as another person mentioned, they retain their re-sale value quite well. Beware, though, or at least be prepared because hondas are also one of the most popular cars for thieves because of their high re-sale value and popularity. Make sure you get an immobilizer with it.

A Honda Civic. Reliable. Great warranty, great gas mileage, inexpensive, great resell value, abundancy of people who can work on them, access to parts anywhere. Nothing beats a Honda for the pricepoint, styling, performance and reliability. They are also very safe for their size. Toyota and Volkswagen have comparable entry-level cars although Volkswagen is somewhat more expensive (and has more creature comforts).
Honda's have great resell prices and are considered one the best resell cars out there (both Civic, Honda and the new one called ??? that is really, really cool!).

One that runs and doesnt eat gas like its going out of style.. i personally think a first car should be one with a stick shift thats not a sports car.. less trouble that way and better on gas..and i think everyone should learn how to drive a stick shift..

Depends on your personality. My wife loves big LOUD!!! trucks. I like my SUV. Then again, I miss my Humvee. Nothing like having a machine gunner in the turret to get cars out of your way.

A used sedan with airbags all around. Why? Cheaper insurance, gas mileage, and if you get a wreck, it wouldn't cost as much, or depress you as much as a new car.
