both are different formats of video files,avi is a uncompressed video file with windows compatible, latter is from apple compatible with a wider range of application the important thing is its a compressed video format (ofcourse with loss of quality).but u can use .mpg movies for web,it will be easily loaded on net comparing to avi. if quality is the matter, then go for avi

Avi files are not compressed so they are larger. Mpg files are compressed.
