MP3 is actually a short form of Mpeg3, which stands for "motion pictures experts group, 3." The Mpeg is a bunch of people who sit around and decide what standards to use, much in the same way that some group once decided how long a mile is, etc. The 3 means it is the third compression scheme they have come up with, and the 4 is of course the fourth. Your digital music files contain a lot of information that the average person can't ear, such as very high and very low frequencies. Compression is a way of making files smaller by removing sounds we can't normally hear. Also, as an example, imagine a loud jackhammer playing next door, while a cat meows down the street. On a quiet night, you could maybe hear the cat, but not with the louder sound masking it. Translate that to music, and imagine a loud guitar, while at the same time the original recording has, say, a very quiet background noise. The compression scheme is what tells the music player to ignore the quiet sounds when the loud ones are playing, and consequently the quiet sounds don't take up space anymore: smaller files. So mp4 (called AAC by Apple) is a more efficient scheme, meaning it can take a certain file (a sound or a song) and make it smaller than it would be if it were an Mp3, but it will still sound better than the Mp3. The only drawback to Mp4 is that not all digital music players will recognize them because they don't have the instructions that tell them what to do with music that was recorded using that compression scheme.

it truly is amazingly ordinary. mp3 is a music record and mp4 is a video record. An i-pod video is in many circumstances reffered to as an mp4 participant. even as a Ipod is only a larger popular mp3 participant because it performs music records.
