I would check out the Musashi Series with Toshiro Mifune. I believe they are more closer to the anime than others, and then try the Kurosawa films.

I haven't seen that many modern Samurai movies, but I have the DVD of THE SEVEN SAMURAI directed by Japanese Akira Kurowsawa, which is one of the earliest and most influential of the cinematic genre. It was imitated in the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. Roger Ebert, one of the most prominent movie critics, considers it to be a great movie and you can read his assesment.

Kill Bill vol. 1 is an awsome movie. Although its not purely samurai, it is an amazingly good movie with lots of sword fighting and bloody action.
