Elementary teachers are "generalists" in that they do no need a masters degree to teach. However, most teachers hold two university degrees- a Bachelor's in a degree of their choice [for example, BA in English is popular, but you can be a Science degree holder too- I am one- I have also seen people with Engineering degrees decide that they were meant to be teachers!]. After the first degree, teachers then go through a Bachelor's of Education program for the second degree, which tends to be shorter.

There are of course other ways to become eligible to teach- each state/province/country/school district will have their own alternative certification options.

Helpful majors for teaching would include English, Mathematics, Science and History. However, don't forget that schools need "specialists" as well in music, art, drama, PE and second languages- since you are in LA, Spanish would be it.

Hope that helps!

Do you mean L.A.? I ask because I come from LA. That is the postal code for Louisiana. L.A. stands for Los Angeles.

If you mean LA, not L.A., then an elementary teacher majors in elementary educuation, usually. However, you can get an add on certification with any major. You'll have to take some education courses, and usually you can choose an age level to focus on. This is probably the same or similar in L.A. as well.

Good luck.

You need to get a BA in early childhood education to teach K-3. Call up a local college admission office and tell them what you are interested in and they will tell you if they have a program for you.
