yep i agree. if you have money to eat then you should have money to leave a decent tip. unless the service was out of this world bad then one should always leave a tip. i'm a server myself and a pretty good one but i always run into those who have the nerves to walk out w/o leaving a tip. it's horrible!!!!

15% is considered customary, which in some ways I believe is wrong, because I think tipping should be optional. I have no problem in tipping someone that does a good job, but when I am at a restaurant and get poor service, or ignored, I don't feel like leaving the person a tip. I always do, but that isn't the point.
It doesn't matter how busy the restaurant is (I'll give some leeway here) or how bad of day my server has had. If I'm being served, I don't want it to be a bad experience.

So, I should tip a server 20% regardless of their job?
Does that mean that I should tip someone who does their job twice as good as the average 40%?

I'd rather pay more for my meal knowing that the server is being paid a decent wage, then I can leave a tip only if they did a good job.

I used to work part-time as a waiter and I ways make sure to tip at least 15% and if the service I thought was superior I go to 20%. I remember a little over a year ago my father taking us out to dinner and I was mortified by how low a tip he was going to leave and offered to pay or at least add more to the tip. However, if you are really unhappy with the pay you are getting I would think you should consider another line of work. I remember being in the Netherlands where the gov't there mandates a minimum tip that was something over 20%. I don't remember every being in a place where I got worse service - expect in a Chinese resturant in Amsterdam. The service was so good I ate there two nights in a row.

Anyone who tips under 15% falls into one of the following catagories:

They are just really rude and may think they are being funny;

they didn't do there math well (my dad);

they think service they recieved was inferior and by giving you less than 15% they are saying they were unhappy with the service;

they are short on the money;

they are simply cheap.

Best of luck to you!!! :-)

$2.13 / hr? are you serious? I won't choose this job and expect tips for more..I would rather have another job..sorry not all the people knows this..but as you don't like the way people give their tips or not giving I think it is better for you to get another job. I don't say being a server is a bad job, but the way you choose your job and complain about it is something not really healthy for you..I think you deserve better...don't you think so?

and I agree with ppl who.. is looking for a good meal and a good service.. so it is his choice to tip or not..
as we eat out most of the time, we don't tip much higher than 10% each. so if we are in group how much tip you wold get for 3 persons.. meals that we could actually prepare at home.. but we choose to eat out sometimes for some reasons.. meetings, occasions, etc..
don't get the wrong idea, I worked as a waitress too, but tipping is not customary.. so we worked 2 jobs... that was in Japan.. good service but never ever got a tip even once for 7 years. ..then we moved, now I am working as a volunteer in a counter section and when people give me 50 cents for a tip..I was so embarrased because I don't expect it but they think I was nice. yeah the chain is small area so if you got tip for your service that means it is big... I just placed it inside the cashier and just happy to be appreciated.. I might find a good job someday but not a waitress maybe..because I don't want our customer to think I am working there for their tips.. yes am not working yet,,
, I do think you deserve a good tip.. for good jobs..

I think you are missing the point.....when I go into a restaurant I pay for the food, the restaurant pays you to serve the meal. THE TIP ..is for HOW you serve. If you want more tips maybe you should look at HOW you serve. If the service is poor I will not tip good and I will not go back to the restaurant, no matter how good the food. EXAMPLE..there is a very good, popular, highly recommended restaurant in Denver that we visited. the service was so bad it ruined the whole experience. WE will never go back. there are too many other good restaurants,why go back where the service is bad.

I think that when servers take they job they know how much they are going to make and therefore shouldn't complain about not getting tips. I don't think that with the price of everything today that tips should be as high as expected (20%).

First, you clearly did not ask a question.

Second, tipping is a function of good service. Better service warrants a higher tip. Crappy service warrants no tip. Quit complaining about how much I tip and develop an attitude of service. The tips will come.

tipping questions pizz me off.............if you cant conduct yourself in a rest and not be so over critical then stay home..........people who worry so much about how much they have to tip actaully cause themselves to get bad service..........its because you are looking for any reason whatsoever not to tip......We waitresses can spot you a mile away............I forgot to bring an extra side of something a few days ago......I noticed when I came back to the table......I said opps Ill be right back I forgot to grab your extra dressing.............as I was walking away I heard him say "well theres a dollar off her tip" Screw him...........omg he had to wait there on his fat azz for 2 minutes while I went a got him extra dressing...........for a salad that already had enough dressing on it mind you........then the cow didnt even use it the extra.......
