I have to get this off my chest because I just got cussed out by some blue hair bible thumper because I was enjoying my usual after dinner pipe in the VERY BACK of the smoking section at a very large restaurant.
If you hate smoking, do not go to a restaurant that has a smoking section. That's the best way to get that restaurant to quit allowing smoking there, bitching at me will do no good. NOBODY has died from second hand smoke and there has NOT been any cases reported to the American Medical Association showing that second hand smoke does anything to non smokers except make their clothes smell bad.
If my smoking offends you, all I'm going to say is "I'm sorry"
Remember this: There is nowhere in the constitution that says you have the right to not be offended. Am I a jerk for puffing on a pipe? Maybe. But I do have a constitutional right to be a jerk if I want to.

The point is, if you go to a restaurant that has a smoking section, expect there's going to be smokers.

Well, numbnuts, first of all the Surgeon General and the A.M.A. and the American Lung Assoc.and the American Cancer Society have gone on the record saying there is a direct correlation between second hand smoke and the event of cancer. So,you are wrong on that point. Also, smoking a pipe or cigar is much more obnoxious than a cigarette because of the stench and the fact that the smell stays in the air longer. This is why some restaurants that still have smoking sections request you refrain from smoking them.I look forward to the day all restaurants are smoke free. Then maybe we can make them jerk free next.

I agree with you for the most part. I am a non-smoker. I cannot smoke because I get bronchitis due to my sinuses and smoke does irritate it. I know that if I go to a bar or restaurant I may have to deal with some smoke. the only time smoke really bothers me is when I'm in a very enclosed area.

I think that smokers should be able to smoke, but maybe restaurants could work to make the areas more separate, until then the non-smokers who are so pissed off should not go to the restaurants where they know people will be smoking!

And no way should smoking be banned in bars. That is the environment at bars, deal with it!

Quoting: "NOBODY has died from second hand smoke and there has NOT been any cases reported to the American Medical Association showing that second hand smoke does anything to non smokers except make their clothes smell bad."

If you are going to make a long post, at least be smart first. That is not true at all. Second-hand smoke causes deaths, birth defects and asthma, especially in small children. If you don't believe that, do some research...or some thinking - that might do you some good, too.

As for the other things you said - I have never yelled at someone for smoking - but I have been disgusted before. It doesn't say anywhere in the constitution that we have the right not to be offended - you're correct - but being offended is not the problem, hun. The problem is being affected. Tobacco was not expected to be deadly when it picked up its popularity - now that we know what we know, it's responsible to protect our own health.

If you have the right to sit in a place of business and smoke, don't I also have the right to eat without smoke entering into my body? You cannot cut others rights for the sake of your own. You have a right to harm your own health - you do not have the right to harm mine. Since my sitting and eating is not harming you - but your sitting and smoking is harming me, then who is infringing on whose health rights?

Smoking is not a constitutional right. It is a vice - an instrument of addiction. If you want to be addicted to a cancer-causing agent, then do it on your own time - do not sit in public places and affect other people and then act like you have some god-given right to do so. You have a god-given right to breathe and make your own decisions as long as they are not against others rights (like breathing, as well). You smoke, so you don't care about the effects it has on someone's health - but maybe you wouldn't mind if the rest of us who DO care about the harmful effects of tobacco smoke try to live long, healthy lives while you are cutting yours short? Yeah, thanks and have a good day, just you and your mucus.

thats true they should expect that there are smokes there if theres a smoking section! I dont smoke but my husband does! I dont like to be to close when hes smoking though cause i have asthma and it just makes me worse with asthma even though he doesnt believe me sometimes! The thing is with smokers...its like they dont want to believe that what their smoking is hazardous to their health. My husband has been smoking since he was 10 years old. I just hope that he gets lucky and doesnt have lung cancer or anything else cause it is possible. There are people that has smoked all their life pretty much and never had lung cancer or anything like that. And what my husband hates the most is when he goes to the doctor for anything...they blame it on his smoking even though it has nothing to do with smoking lol. Anyway, antismokers cant do anything about it till the restaurant...makes it completely non smoking. lol I hoped that helped and have a nice day!

First, that's not a question, it's a rant. Second you were in the smoking section, so that lady should have minded her own business. Third, people get mad at smokers because some (not all) are very rude and dirty. Everywhere I go I see cigarette butts all over the ground RIGHT NEXT TO OUTDOOR ASHTRAYS!!!!! It's disgusting, I have watched people standing right next to the ashtray throw their butt into the street and when I said something to my coworker she looked at me like I had three heads. I do agree with your last statement and I have asked to be moved if a hostess tries to seat me too close to the smoking section.

i quit smoking cigarettes a while ago but I can understand smoking after a meal or definetly while your drinking also. I remeber being in california while I still smoked and I walked in the gas station, every person in the store started yelling out me to get out!, Even the clerk is yelling at me over the counter to leave with my cigarette. It was like I had a bomb strapped to my chest. A lot of non-smokers take this 2nd hand smoke crap to seriously. I do not believe the 2nd hand smoke theory, I think its BS !

This is quite a good debate. We have a bigger joke regarding the smoking issue in South Africa. They sent out figures nationwide, stating that 7 out of 10 people with lung disease are smokers. Some people did their own survey and found that at least 8 out of 10 people ARE smokers. So meassure the odds? If you are a non smoker, you chances of obtaining lung disease are bigger? The whole smoking issue around the world is a HUGE JOKE! I am a smoker and I am a happy man.

I'll take your point that you have to expect smoke if there's a smoking section--although a pipe is pretty nasty as compared with a cigarette.

It's troublesome to me that people want to have some deaths documented before they'll believe that secondhand smoke is harmful. If it's harmful when you pull the smoke into your lungs through a cigarette (which is documented), why wouldn't the same smoke be harmful to someone breathing it in from the other end?

Are you retarded? People die from the effects of second hand smoke everyday. As for your "rights." Your rights end where another persons begin. I have the right to breathe with out being exposed to the dangerous chemicals in your second hand smoke. I also have the right to not smell as bad as you. On that note, I do agree with one of your points, if a person feels so strongly about their right to smoke free air, they should go to restraunts that don't allow smoking.
