AVG (see below)

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

everyone can recommend alot of anti virus programs but you should at least try them all out, Ive tried over 20 diff major anti virus progs and have found one thing in common, the good ones id take note in and reccommend are the ones that programmers over seas made, since Ive found some of the most hard registry keys to find for foreign anti viruses are overseas and when u have that great of anti virus its worth getting, cus if ya cant find a key imagine how many other people cant and if all those other people cant that means programmers that make viruses wont know the virus database in which that anti virus prog uses and if they dont know that, there viruses can be useless

Norton. But not any Norton, Norton Internet Security is THE BEST. It has a firewall, antivirus, anti spy, intrustion detectin. It informs you of everything thats going on pretty much! like when a program is trying to access the internet, you can choose to accept or deny it.

McAfee. Get the entire Security Suite. Great Firewall also. You can buy it from a retailer or download from mcafee.com. PC World recently gave it an Editors Choice. I've used it for years and it's caught everything.

What I don't like about Nortons is that it can bog down your system.

I've been able to deal with nearly every malware that I've come across using just 3 tools. Grisoft's AVG, Lavasoft's Ad-aware (an adware detection and removal tool) and Spybot Search and Destroy (a spyware and malware detection and removal tool). All are free for download and all have free malware definition updates..

http://free.grisoft.com/
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html

Hope these help.
