The figures are obtained from the Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB),

These monitor the usage of TV in the homes of 5100 users.

These users have an electronic box in their home and their TV viewing is monitored. The results from this monitoring are then extrapolated for the population as a whole to give the viewing figure.

I was under the opinion that they had a selected number of trial homes where they have a "box" on theire tv that records what channels they watch. They then multiply this number by another to give the general viewing figures.

the viewers panel is made up of a selection of households and given a handset, each member of the household is assigned a number on the handset, linked to a device in the main tv. everytime the tv is switched on, it registers the time and channel selected on the device. every person in the room at that time presses their button on the handset, and everytime they leave the room they deselect their number, this data is collected remotely from the device in the tv and the results are collated to give the viewing numbers for the whole country.

their job is to fill in a questionaire every five minutes and
send it by magic to the central television bureau of watchers watching statistics who then compile the information and tell

the cable company knows at every second how many people are watching each channell. when you stay on a channell for a specific ammount of time, they get a signal that says you have "tuned in" to that program.

Back in the 90's, I used to be sent a booklet with what was on tv and I had to mark what I had taped and watched on t.v. and rate it.I used to then send it back and they would compile viewing figures that way. Never used to get paid for it!!
