It is extremely rare for a llama to bite, but llamas at petting zoos sometimes learn to bite because of all the people hand feeding them. A llama that has been trained and handled correctly will allow a person to approach them but they will not approach a person first and will certainly not chew on their clothes. It's a sad fact that most petting zoo llamas end up being killed because they eventually become too aggressive to be safe around people. An adult male llama weigh as much as 400 pounds, and can really hurt somebody if they get to the point that they are so aggressive that they will start chest-butting people that don't have food for them, or if they have been abused at some time in their life. Llamas usually can't do much damage with their teeth. They have teeth all the way around on the bottom, but on top they only have teeth in the back, the front is just a gum. Adult males do grow six teeth called "fighting teeth", which are razor sharp and meant for fighting with other llamas, but they are easily removed and almost all responsible llama owners have them taken out so that they don't injure another llama with them. Females can also grow "fighting teeth", but they are smaller and not as sharp and usually do not have to be removed. They also can't do much damage with their feet, which are padded on the bottom like a dogs, and have two toenails on top which have to be regularly trimmed. Llamas do spit their stomach contents when they are very afraid or upset. It's gross and green and stinky, but really pretty harmless and it's very rarely aimed at people. It's usually tended for another llama when they are having issues over food. Our llamas have never spit at anyone even when they are having vet work done or being groomed or clipped, so it's really not commonplace and they most definitely do not go around spitting at people unless they have been mishandled. A well trained llama is gentle and safe and a joy to be around, please do not base your opinion of them on a petting zoo animal that has never had the chance to learn how to "act like a llama".

Llamas have no upper teeth in the front of their mouths, so if you got your hand caught in one's mouth, it could do very little damage. They have a soft pallet on the top of their mouth which aids them in pulling grass and leaves when they eat. They are usually very gentle and careful to pick things out of your hand with their split upper lip which they use like fingers to pick up food. Due to their quiet, gentle nature, it would be very rare for a llama to be aggressive (if it were, this would indicate a serious problem with the llama). Adult male llamas do have 6 fighting teeth which they use in fighting each other. In domestication, the prudent breeder/owner cuts these teeth off flat so that they can do no damage. Llamas do have chewing teeth in the rear of their mouths that they use to chew their food and their cud
