On September 5, 1970, Lotus-Ford driver Jochen Rindt of Austria was killed during practice for the Italian GP at Monza.
He was awarded the driving title posthumously on the basis of his 45 points accumulated during the seven previous races.
He won five of those races - Monaco, Holland, France, Britain and Germany.
