Ok, being in the psychology section, let's chew on this some...I agree that people don't change...also that we can't actually change...or at least not on our own. We need something or some one to change us from the inside out. And the only one who can do that is the Holy Spirit of God. But we have to allow Him to change us. But when He does, though it'll be gradual, it'll also be obvious in the character of that person.
But in terms of the actual question, I"m not sure if I can agree that circumstances are what reveal the true nature, but the reaction to the circumstance that reveals it. For instance, I've heard there are no atheists in foxholes (while being bomb-shelled), b/c in that circumstance, when they know they're going to die, they'll begin praying to whatever they can think of. So it's not the circumstance itself, but their reaction to it.

People are objectively empty edifice. We are the subjective beings who want people to change due to the influences that has engrained into our noggin. And when circumstances comes unbound and adrift - we see the subjective nature of our own character as well as others..

All people are different, just cause one person didnt follow through with their promise to change does not mean its not possible.

I think people do change. But I also think people behave differently in different environments and situations.

No matter how many oranges you squeezee, or how you squeez them, you aways get orange juice.
People are the same way. When you squeeze them, what they are made of comes out,

THAT IS NOT COMPLETELY TRUE.
SOME PEOPLE CAN CHANGE. DON'T BE SO NEGATIVE ABOUT A PERSON. GIVE THEM A CHANCE.
IF THE PERSON SAID THEY WOULD CHANGE IT WILL TAKE AWHILE TO IMPROVE.
BUT IF THE PERSON JUST TOLD YOU NO THEN THAT MEANS NO.
