Pearls. Here's why: A Pearl is the quiet girl in the corner nobody knows is hot until prom night. A Diamond is the popular chick with the blonde hair (no offense), fake personality, not so hot body, and predictable style. Though the diamond has been used to describe the first girl (a Diamond in the rough), the diamond has become as typical as gold.

A diamond, and not because of the value.
To make a pearl, an oyster has to die.
No animals are harmed in the making of a diamond.

A Diamond!!! Because...
1. They take years and years to make.
2. They cannot be made artifically or cultured - like pearls.
3. They last forever.
4. They shine and are all twinkly and stuff.
5. They are the hardest substance in the whole universe.
6. They make you feel like a MILLION bucks when you wear them.
7. Honestly... would you really prefer a pearly engagment ring to a rock??!?!?!?
'Nuff said!

I like diamond cos it seems to be indestructible. A diamond can withstand the elements better than pearl. I like the twinkle it gives out. A diamond is harder than pearl. Well, diamond is forever.

I think a pearl is more special because of the religious significance of how it is created. It starts when an impurity, which can be analogous to sin, enters the oyster's body causing irritation. But in a miraculous way it is covered over and transformed into a beautiful white gem. Just like what happens when a Christian experiences a changed life in Christ and the rough sin nature is clothed in the purity of the new and Holy nature. An oyster was not permissible for the Jews to eat so it can represent the gentile church in this analogy.
Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
