Why would this have offended him?

If Zidane was called a Terrorist the only logical explanation is that althought Zizou is french born - his parents are immigrants from Algerian & are Sunni Muslim. Zidane himself describes himself as a Non practicing Muslim & is married to a french woman (Veronique) who has Spanish descent (she is fact Roman Catholic).

So for anyone to call Zidane a "Terrorist" would be to imply his religion (practicing or not) makes him so & would be offensive, not all muslims go around plotting or doing terrorist attacks & its wrong to suggest such a thing. In the current climate, muslims seem to be sensitive to comments like this & apparently French Algerians are more so.

Its important to point at although there has been many lipreaders employed by Newspapers/Media etc that say Materazzi called him "A son of a Terrorist Whore", Zidane himself denied in his live interview on Chanel Plus station on French TV that the "word Terrorist was not used by Materazzi" and says the insults were said 3 times about his mother & sister.

I have no idea why one would call him that. But these days many people are called "terrorist" without being one. And the present governments of the USA and other western countries are giving a bad example to the world.

And why would such an accusation offend someone? Well, I am not sure how you would react if someone would accuse you of being a terrorist? Any unfounded accusation, especially one of such magnitude, is bound to insult. And many people would then react very angry.

I DON'T BLAME ZIDANE

Words/insults hurt more than physical pain. So Zidane's head butt is less hurting than Matterrazi's insults. The moral of the story is, verbal bullying should not be tolerated.

he wasnt ,but an insult to his mother and sister is just as worse...in my opinion Matterazzi delibarately provoked him so that he would be red-carded,out of the game like the others, and now that the best players who are excellent at scoring and striking skills are out(henry, zidane and veirra)the italians gained their cheating goal(they cheated in a very obvious way in that Australian-Italian round to the quarter-finals in the round of 16.

Because some ignorant people think all followers of Islam are terrorists.
Some people even think Iraq had something to do with terrorism and destroyed the country on the basis of that lie, but that's another matter.

Because he scored two penalty against Portugal!! (euro 2000/wc2006)!! ;p
I've no idea! Being muslim is not a reason. He is a great player and he should already know how to keep is head cool, that's all.
