Could be steroids, could be dedication. After all, I don't know anything about how much European sports starts get paid, but they're extremely overpaid here. If I had a skill, I'd probably go for it, because I could play a game and win, even if the team lost.

Americans are strong at sports because of the fact that our culture stresses sports over many other things. We have entire TV and radio stations dedicated to sports. This sets them near equal to National and International events in the minds of many Americans. Because of the fact that Americans idolize sports, there are people who work their hardest to be the best athletes that they can be. Thus, we have a plethora of excellant athletes.

In the Olympics, Americans are strong because of the money that they receive from the Government and private companies, which helps them train.
And population has something to do with it also.

How many true Americans are there in U.S.A ? America is a pickle of human beings and if you take a honest look you will come to know they are mostly foreigners involved in sports. They are naturalized citizens.

Capitalism. We pay people a lot of money to be good at sports, thus promoting good athletes.
