Swimming is best for training your aerobic endurance, which is critical to distance running. But don't neglect the weights either.

It's really hard to compare the two sports. I never swam competitively, but I did wrestle, and it's no picnic. The training is more multifaceted than swimming, and I will say it's a more complex sport, there are more things you have to worry about. You have to be thinking two moves ahead of your opponent, and you need to come up and implement a Plan B should things not turn out the way you have planned (you'll be doing this every few seconds on the fly), you likely also won't have a major size or strength advantage over your opponent. Sure there will be some difference in strength, agility and speed, but they guy you're wrestling will be about same size and will probably have at least somewhat similar physical attributes as you. I also think you have to be more durable to wrestle, your opponent is actively trying to maim you. Depending on what you specialize in, swimming can be more taxing when it comes to endurance, it's not easy or pleasant to swim thousands of yards in a practice. I do know a guy who tried wrestling, his sophomore year in HS, he was a year round swimmer previously and was quite good, he usually finished in top 8 in zones in his best events most years. He went to a week's worth of wrestling practices and decided to go back to swimming, he didn't like the physical abuse that's pretty much an unavoidable aspect of wrestling. Overall I think that swimming harder in the sense that it pits the individual against himself, you can still lose but take away a moral victory if you improve your personal best time(s). and wrestling is harder in that it pits the individual against another person. If you lose, you lose, it's pretty much cut and dry.

I don't know that much about wrestling, but swimming will definitely benefit your running. It's a good cardio exercise that will also build up speed and endurance. Swimming is a very good overall workout for pretty much any sport.

Wrestling is best for getting in better shape. Be careful, depending on your athletic ability, you could get hurt if you don't be careful.
